I am a proofreader and copy-editor specialising in academic publications and business documentation in science, technology and mathematics.
Having achieved a PhD in physics at Newcastle University and spent 15 years in the IT industry, I have a thorough knowledge of scientific and technological communication challenges and an appreciation of the importance of adhering to timelines and providing excellent customer service.
As a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), formerly the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), the organisation supporting professional editors and proofreaders in the UK, I follow the industry standard methods for copy-editing and proofreading. I have completed several CIEP/SfEP and Publishing Training Centre (PTC) courses, including the PTC Essential Copy-Editing course.
Skills and experience
In addition to the proofreading experience gained since becoming self-employed, my time in the IT industry provided me with skills in adapting written communication to meet the expectations of the intended audience, whether they were a technical business reviewer, an inexperienced team member or a non-technical consumer.

Personal
I was born in southern England, grew up in the midlands, and then headed north east. I now live in the seaside village of Tynemouth with my family. When my daughter was little, I volunteered to read with kids in her school. These enthusiastic learners enhanced my appreciation of the richness, complexities and barking-mad inconsistencies of the English language.
