About me

Juliet Foster

Juliet Foster, North East ProofreadingI am a proofreader and copy-editor specialising in academic publications and business documentation in science, technology and mathematics.

Having achieved a PhD in Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics at Newcastle University, followed by fifteen years in the IT industry, I have a thorough knowledge of scientific and technological communications challenges, with an appreciation of the importance of adhering to timelines and providing excellent customer service.

As a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), formerly the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), the organisation supporting professional editors and proofreaders in the UK, I follow the industry standard methods for copy-editing and proofreading. I have completed several CIEP/SfEP and Publishing Training Centre (PTC) courses and have recently completed the PTC Essential Copy-Editing course.

Skills and experience

In addition to the proofreading experience gained since becoming a freelancer, the years spent in the IT industry have given me skills in adapting written communication to meet the expectations of the intended audience, whether they were a technical business reviewer, an inexperienced team member or a non-technical consumer.

IMG_4745I was born in the South of England, grew up in the Midlands and I now live in the North East. I am lucky enough to have made my home in the beautiful seaside village of Tynemouth where I live with my husband, daughter and two cats. When my daughter was younger, I regularly volunteered in her school. Reading with such youngsters enhanced my appreciation of the complexities and richness of the English language. I’ve been amazed and delighted with the children’s increasing proficiency in the mechanics of reading and their ever-improving comprehension, as well as their enthusiasm for books.
